Resumo: A produção desta publicação tem muito em comum com a visão e o papel que a UNESCO atribui à História, a começar pela narrativa escolhida, cujo fio condutor foram os processos mais marcantes do desenvolvimento social e econômico do país. A obra não se restringe ao monumental, mas ao lado da criação artística e simbólica, registra a dinâmica da ocupação do território, da formação das cidades, da produção e do trabalho. Um projeto que pretenda uma visão tão abrangente não poderia, assim como se deu com as pesquisas históricas organizadas pela UNESCO, resultar de um único olhar. Por essa razão, a coordenação editorial foi buscar especialistas em cada região do país, notáveis não apenas pela qualidade e pela profundidade dos seus conhecimentos específicos, mas também pelo fato de serem profissionais cujas vidas têm sido dedicadas à proteção e a divulgação desses bens culturais. A obra é uma consolidação de conhecimentos que, embora não inéditos, raramente se apresentaram sistematizados, associados e conduzidos por uma narrativa comum, possibilitando a construção de um quadro que faz jus à perspectiva de formação do Brasil.

Abstract: The production of this publication has much in common with the vision and the role that UNESCO attributes to History, especially by the narration chosen that had the most significant processes of social and economic development in the country as its main conductor. The work is not restricted to monumental approach, but it also registers the dynamic of the Brazilian territory's occupation, of the formation of cities, of the production and of the work, besides the artistic and symbolic creativity. This project that intended to give such a wide vision - as well as other historic studies organized by UNESCO - could not result in only one single point of view. For this reason, the publishing coordination of this book gathered specialists of each different region of the country that are renowned not simply by their quality and depth of their specific knowledge, but also by the fact that they are professionals that have their lives dedicated to the protection and promotion of these cultural heritages. This work is a consolidation of knowledge that has rarely been presented by a narrative as systematized, associated, and conducted as it is that allows the reader to build a real portrait of the formation of Brazil.
